Eluned Morgan, Baroness Morgan of Ely (born 16 February 1967 in Cardiff) is a former member of the European Parliament for the Labour Party for Wales, between 1994 and 2009. She currently works as Director of National Development for SSE in Wales. (SWALEC)
The daughter of the late Revd Canon Bob Morgan OBE, a vicar in the Church in Wales, and Elaine Morgan she was born and brought up in Ely, Cardiff a working class housing estate on the outskits of Cardiff.[1] Educated at Glantaf Welsh language comprehensive school, she won a scholarship to the United World College of the Atlantic, part of the United World Colleges and she gained a degree in European Studies from the University of Hull. Eluned formerly worked as a researcher for S4C and the BBC. In 1990 she worked as a Stagiaire in the European Parliament. She was the youngest MEP when she took up her seat in 1994.
Eluned Morgan served as the budget control spokesperson for the 180 strong Socialist Group. She was also the Labour Party's European spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Science. She was responsible for drafting the European Parliament's response to the Energy Green Paper and also took the lead role in negotiating on behalf of the Parliament the revision of the Electricity Directive. Considerable strides were made in increasing the rights of consumers in the revisions and fuel poverty was for the first time placed on the European agenda.
Eluned Morgan served on the Welsh Labour Party Executive for ten years and was appointed to the Welsh Assembly Advisory Group which was responsible for developing the standing orders of the National Assembly of Wales. She was a founding member of the Yes for Wales Cross party group which campaigned for the Assembly to be established.
On 19 November 2010 it was announced that Ms Morgan had been granted a peerage and would sit on the Labour benches of the House of Lords,[2] as Baroness Morgan of Ely, of Ely in the City of Cardiff.[3]
Eluned Morgan is a Fellow of Trinity College Carmarthen, and is an Honorary Distinguished Professor of Cardiff University. She served on the Board of the International Baccalaureate Organisation for three years. She is the Chair of the Cardiff Business Partnership. She is on the board of the Wales Governance Centre and is on the Council of Atlantic College. She is a fluent Welsh speaker and also speaks Spanish and French. Eluned Morgan gave the inaugural Patrick Hannan memorial lecture for BBC Radio Wales in 2011.
Morgan is married to Ely-based General Practitioner Rhys Jenkins, and the couple have two children.[4] Morgan commutes regularly from Cardiff to the Lords.[5]
