The Communist insurgency in the Philippines refers to conflict between the government of the Philippines and the Communist Party of the Philippines and their New People's Army (NPA).

The insurgency reached its peak in the 1980s during martial law in the Philippines under President Ferdinand Marcos.[citation needed] The NPA has never received much support from outside the Philippines, relying mostly on support from the local population.[citation needed] In 2010, a government crackdown further weakened the rebels significantly.[citation needed]

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program, a program based at Uppsala University which is "one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts,"[9] says that from 1989 to 2012 between 6,970 to 9,366 people were killed in the conflict.[10]

Beginning in 2013 there was an uptick of rebel activities as communist insurgents stepped up attacks in Mindanao and southern Luzon.[11][12] On March 14, 2014, top communist leaders Benito Tiamzon and Wilma Tiamzon were captured in Cebu.[13]

On December 26, 2014, the Philippines and the local Communist Party agree to renew talks that may lead to a peace treaty which could end the 46-year insurgency.[14][15]

Timeline[edit]

1969[edit]

2014[edit]

  • March 22 - Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) Chairman Benito Tiamzon and wife Wilma Tiamzon, who also sits as the secretary general of the New People's Army (NPA), and five others were arrested in Barangay Zaragosa, Aloguinsan, Cebu. The Tiamzons had a standing warrant of arrest orders for crimes against humanity which include murder, multiple murder, and frustrated murder charges.[16][17]
  • March 27 - five days after the arrest of the couple, Andrea Rosal, who was the daughter of former NPA spokesman "Ka Roger" Rosal (deceased), was arrested in Caloocan City.[18]
