Islam is believed to have been introduced to Malta when the Muslims captured Sicily from the Byzantines in 870.[1] Malta returned to a Christian European power with the Norman conquest in 1091. Muslims were allowed to practise their religion freely until the 13th century.[2]
The vast majority of Muslims in Malta, around 6,000, are foreigners.[3] There is one mosque, founded in 1978 by the World Islamic Call Society, a Libyan governmental association that promotes Islam, and one Muslim primary school.[4][dead link]
