Anderson of Class 2 (1976–1978) on July 17, 2016. The most recent Class 1 senator to die was Rod Grams (1995–2001) on October 8, 2013. The most recently serving Class 2 senator to die was Paul Wellstone (1991–2002), who died in office on October 25, 2002.
