New Mexico was admitted to the Union on January 6, 1912, and elects senators in Class 1 and Class 2. Its current Senators are Democrats Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich.

Living former U.S. Senators from New Mexico[edit]

As of September 2017, there are two former Senators who are currently living, both from Class 1. The most recent senator to die was Pete Domenici (1973–2009) of Class 2 on September 13, 2017. The most recent Class 1 senator to die was Edwin L. Mechem (1962-1964) on November 27, 2002. The most recently serving Class 1 senator to die was Joseph Montoya (1964-1977) on June 8, 1978.
