North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, and elects senators to Class 1 and Class 3. Its current Senators are Republican John Hoeven and Democrat Heidi Heitkamp.

As of October 2016, there are four former Senators who are living: one from Class 1, two from Class 3, and one who has belonged to both classes. The most recent senator to die was Quentin N. Burdick of Class 1 (1960-1992), who died in office on September 8, 1992. The most recent Class 3 senator to die was Milton Young (1945-1981) on May 31, 1983.
