Madarosis is the absence or loss of the eyelashes (and sometimes the eyebrows), either as a congenital condition or as a result of an infection.E.g. Leprosy,alopecia totalis etc.

Madarosis is the absence of eyelashes and in severe cases eyebrows. It can be caused by infection or malignant neoplasms.

Causes [edit]

Local causes:

  1. chronic disease of the frontal eyelid lips
  2. infiltrating tumors
  3. burns
  4. radiotherapy of cryotherapy of local tumors

Skin conditions:

  1. Generalised alopecia
  2. Psoriasis

Systemic Causes

  1. Myxoedema
  2. Systemic lupus erythematosus
  3. Syphilis
  4. Leprosy

Other

  1. Iatrogenic (e.g. after excision)
  2. Trichotilomania
