In the year 1983, the Institute started with the academic programme at UG level in the area of Electronics & Communication Engineering with an intake of 45 Students under the Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi. New programmes in the areas of Computer Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Manufacturing Processes & Automation Engineering were added subsequently. Administrative autonomy was granted to the Institute in 1986. The Institute was registered as a Society in the name of “Delhi Institute of Technology” (DIT) on 12 June 1987.The Institute initiated Ph.D. programmes in 1989 and also formulated a number of PG programmes, four of which were approved by the AICTE in the year 1994. From 1983 till 1998, the Institute was operating from its old campus at Old I.G. Block, Kashmere Gate, Delhi–110 006. The admission towards a full-time Bachelor of Engineering degree in NSIT is through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. 85% of the seats are reserved for students who pass from high schools in the National Capital Territory of Delhi or Delhi region. The remaining 15% seats are for candidates from outside the Delhi region and are admitted on the basis of All India merit Rank in AIEEE.[7] NSIT Admissions 2013 will be based on JEE Main 2013 Exam All Indian Rank.
Admission to postgraduate programs leading to M.Tech. degree is based on performance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) qualifying exam, followed by an interview.[citation needed]
Admission to Ph.D programs is through written test, presentation and interview. The Institute offers Rs 25000/= pm as the Teaching-Cum-Research Fellowship (TRF) to all selected research scholars.
