|Revised Romanization||Bak Sin-hye|
Park Shin-hye (born February 18, 1990) is a South Korean actress and singer. She made her acting debut in the Korean drama Stairway to Heaven (2003). In 2006, she starred in the South Korean-Japanese series Tree of Heaven and later received acclaim for her leading roles in the television dramas You're Beautiful (2009), Heartstrings (2011), Flower Boys Next Door (2013), The Heirs (2013), Pinocchio (2014–2015) and Doctor Crush (2016). In 2015, Park was included in Forbes list of "40 Most Powerful Celebrities" in Korea.
The success of Park's television dramas internationally established her as a top Hallyu star.
Park Shin-hye was born in Gwangju, but raised in Songpa District, Seoul. She made her first appearance on the music video of "Flower" by singer Lee Seung-hwan. Afterwards, she got formal training in singing, dancing and acting.
In 2014, Park was unanimously chosen as the “Nation's Little Sister" for her unchanging beauty, good acting skills and kind personality. She was also picked for having many other talents besides acting including singing and dancing.
On February 15, 2016, she graduated from Chung-Ang University, receiving a degree in Theater and Film and a "Lifetime Achievement Award" as Honorary Ambassador of the school at the graduation ceremony.
Park's fame came when she played the younger version of the character Han Jung-suh in the popular Korean drama Stairway to Heaven. She also starred in Tree of Heaven, along with her former co-star in Stairway to Heaven, Lee Wan. The show received mixed reviews and criticism. However, Park's performance was praised. Many critics keyed in on her portrayal of the character Hana's pain of loving her step brother Yoon-suh (Lee Wan) as brilliantly done. She was also praised for delivering her lines in fluent Japanese despite the fact she does not speak the language herself. Tree of Heaven started with borderline mediocre ratings, but went on to finish very respectably and gained a fan base in Korea. This further boosted Park's popularity and credibility in acting. The series was also aired in Japan, thus giving Park more exposure abroad. Since then, Park has done many commercials (CF) and modeled for a number of Asian companies.
Through her roles and their requirements, Park has displayed an instinctive talent for dancing and martial arts. She has also released a digital single, "Prayer", a song she sang in the drama Tree of Heaven. However, the track was not released in the official OST.
Park made her big screen debut in the movie Evil Twin, a summer horror flick where she had 2 roles: one as the main character, and the other as the ghost of the main character's sister, who haunts the other sister after her death. Park was extremely happy to act in this movie, because she had always wanted to act in a period setting drama or movie. In January 2007, Park starred as one of the four main characters in Goong S, a spin-off (not the sequel) to the wildly successful Goong. The series did not match the success of its original, and received borderline ratings. However, the drama was the most re-watched and replayed series in the first half of 2007, gaining fame after the first run.
Park later gained pan-Asia recognition through idol drama series You're Beautiful with Jang Keun-suk. She plays a nun who disguises herself as a guy and becomes an idol boy band member. The series gained a cult following with many viewers watching and discussing it online, and eventually became so popular in Japan that it is believed to have overtaken the popularity of Winter Sonata. She also sang the songs "Lovely Day" and "Without Words" for the drama's original soundtrack.
In 2010, Park starred in the low-budget romantic comedy film Cyrano Agency, which revolved around a dating agency that helps its customers win the hearts of the people they desire. The sleeper hit became a critical and commercial success, attracting 2.7 million admissions nationwide, becoming the 8th best selling film of the year. Park later won the Most Popular Actress award in the film category at the Baeksang Arts Awards.
In the subsequent year, Park starred in MBC's youth melodrama Heartstrings opposite Jung Yong-hwa, whom she has worked with on You're Beautiful. Because of Park and Jung's overseas fanbase from their previous drama, broadcasting rights to Heartstrings were pre-sold to eight countries including the Philippines, Japan, China, Hong Kong and North America, ahead of its premiere in South Korea. Park and Jung also held fan meetings in Japan due to the show's popularity over there. She also starred in her first Taiwanese drama, Hayate The Combat Butler, based on the Japanese shōnen manga of the same name.
In 2012, Park was featured in the first three episodes of the show Music and Lyrics with Yoon Gun of Korean R&B duo Brown Eyes. Music and Lyrics is a reality-romance show that collaborates a top actress and an amazing songwriter to write a one-of-a-kind song in 30 days. Their efforts produced the song "I Think of You" which has never been officially released.
The same year, Park joined the cast of the KBS drama special season 3, Don’t Worry, I’m a Ghost which was broadcast on July 15. She plays the ghost Kim Yeon-hwa who was murdered in a robbery. Her portrayal of Yeon-hwa won her the Best One-Act Special Actress Award at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards.
On October 31, 2012, It was announced that Park would star in the third installment of tvN's "flower boy" series called Flower Boys Next Door, along with actor Yoon Shi-yoon. She plays a character that is shy and introverted, who hides away from the world due to her bad past. Broadcasting rights of the show were sold to Japan for the highest price yet for a Korean cable series due to her popularity. The drama series aired from January 7 to the 25th of February 2013.
In 2013, Park starred in Miracle in Cell No. 7 along with veteran Korean actors, such as Ryu Seung-ryong, Oh Dal-su, and Jung Jin-young. On March 15, 2013, 52 days after the movie's release, ticket sales reached 12.32 million, making it the third highest grossing Korean film of all time then. Park's emotional and realistic performance as a lawyer in the film was highly praised, and she went on to win the Best Supporting Actress award at the 33rd Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. She also starred in actor and singer So Ji-sub's music video "Eraser" for his album Two’clock… Playground, alongside former child actor Yoo Seung-ho.
To celebrate her 10th anniversary as an actress, Park held the "2013 Park Shin Hye Asia Tour: Kiss Of Angel" in four Asian countries, becoming the first actress to hold a tour spanning across Asia. During the various events, she impressed many fans and viewers with her eloquent speech, singing and dancing performances.
Park was announced to be starring in The Heirs opposite Lee Min-ho. The series is written by famous writer Kim Eun-sook, and would follow a group of rich, privileged, and elite high school students as they are groomed to take over their families' business empires. Park plays Cha Eun-sang, an ordinary girl who came from a poor family but displays strong-willed characteristics. The drama premiered on October 9, 2013, and Park also released a song as part of the drama's OST titled "Story". The Heirs enjoyed immense popularity both locally, with a peak rating of 28.6%, and internationally, having over one billion hits on the Chinese streaming website iQiyi. Thanks to the drama, Park experienced a surge in popularity internationally, and was named as one of the top Hallyu stars.
Park became the first Korean female actress who has amassed more than five million Weibo followers, proving her popularity in China. She was given the Popular Foreign Actress Award at the Chinese Anhui TV Drama Awards.
In 2014, Park plays the role of the Queen in the historical film, The Royal Tailor, alongside Go Soo, Han Suk-kyu, and Yoo Yeon-seok. The Royal Tailor was released on January 2015. On September 4, 2014, Park was confirmed to star in SBS’ new television series Pinocchio opposite actor Lee Jong-suk. The drama portrayed the passionate pursuit of justice by young news reporters on the social affairs desk. Park plays the character Choi In-ha, the heroine of the drama which has a chronic symptom called "Pinocchio complex", breaking into violent hiccups when she tells lies. The Wednesday-Thursday drama aired from November 2014 to January 2015 . Pinocchio proved to be another successful drama, garnering 6.2 billion won (US$5.62 million) in just one year, with the export price paid for one episode being $280,000. Because of its record-breaking price, "Pinocchio" became the most widely searched word on Chinese search portals and greatly raises Park's popularity overseas.
Park's soaring popularity thanks to The Heirs at the end of 2013 coupled with Pinocchio in 2014 allowed her to rank in Forbes Korea's Top 40 Most Popular Celebrities. In this ranking, Park ranked 36th in earnings, 19th in press exposure, 14th in television exposure and 31st in professionalism criteria which as a whole placed her in the 33rd place of this ranking.
In 2016, Park made her small-screen comeback in SBS Monday-Tuesday drama Doctor Crush opposite actor Kim Rae-won. Park played the titular character Yoo Hye-jeong who transforms from a troubled teenager to a doctor. The drama garnered over 20% ratings nationwide, becoming only one of the four prime-time dramas to do so in 2016. She is then cast in the crime thriller film Silent Witness, a Korean remake of the 2013 Chinese film.
