Pimpri-Chinchwad is a city in the Pune district in the state of Maharashtra, India. It consists of the twin towns of Pimpri and Chinchwad which are governed by a common municipal body (the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation or PCMC). It is located to the North-West of Pune and is well connected to the center of Pune city via the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway.

Demographics [edit]

As of 2011^[update] India census,^[1] Pimpri Chinchwad had a population of 17,29,320. Male population (9.45 lakh) and female population (7.83 lakh). Pimpri Chinchwad has an average literacy rate of 87.19, higher than the national average of 74.04%. In Pimpri Chinchwad, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The main language spoken in the town is Marathi. There is a significant Sindhi population present in Pimpri.^{[citation needed]}

The current commissioner of Pimpri - Chinchwad is Mr. Shrikar Pardeshi ^[2] who replaced Mr. Ashish Sharma for the post who held it for four years.^[2] The additional commissioner is Mr. Prakash Kadam.^[3] Mrs. Mohini Lande is the current mayor and Raju Misal is Deputy-Mayor of Pimpri - Chinchwad.^[4] The JNNURM award for Best Performing City under Sub-Mission for Urban Infrastructure and Governance was given to Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Geography [edit]

The township is situated at a height of 530 m above the sea level. It is blessed with pleasant climate all the year round. Three rivers Pavana, Mula and Indrayani flow through this area. Pimpri-chinchwad sources it water from Pavana river but release of domestic and industrial effluents,^[5] dumping of debris and domestic pollution has severely affected the quality of the Pavana water.though recently efforts have been taken to improve the quality of water,which have been successful in some places along the riverside

The main localities in Pimpri Chinchwad are Chinchwad, Pimpri, Nigdi, Akurdi, kalewadi,and Bhosari. The name Chinchwad is derived from the trees Chinch (tamarind) and Wad (banyan). Chinchwad is famous for Saint Morya Gosavi’s Shrine, which is one of the lord Ganesha’s shaktipeeth in Maharashtra state. Due to the flooding of the river Pavana every year, the temple gets submerged in the river water. Local people consider it as bathing of lord Ganesha. Chinchwad is also the birthplace of the Chapekar brothers. Pimpri-Chinchwad is home to the historic town of Bhosari, originally known as Bhojapuri.^[6] Two thousand years ago, it was the capital of legendary Hindu king Bhoj. During the period of Mahabharata this town was known as Bhojakata, the capital of the Bhoja-Yadava king Rukmi. It is mentioned in Mahabharata that Bhojakata lay to the west of Kundinapuri, the capital of Vidarbha Kingdom.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with lot of rigor and joy, Dasara is also one of the important festival. All industries are closed during that time.

Industries [edit]

Pimpri-Chinchwad is a major industrial hub and hosts one of the biggest industrial zones in Asia.^[7] Industrialization dates back to 1954 with starting of Hindustan Antibiotics Limited^[8] considering this opportunity MIDC took initiative and bought huge scale land in this area.^[9] This town is home to the Indian operations of major automobile companies like Premier Limited, Mahindra Navistar, Bajaj Auto, BEL Optronic Devices Limited, TATA Motors (formerly TELCO), Kinetic Engineering, Force Motors (formerly Bajaj Tempo) DaimlerChrysler, Thermax and Autoline Industries.^[8] In addition to this, several heavy industries such as Forbes-Marshall, ThyssenKrupp and GEA Ecoflex Alfa Laval & Sandvik Asia have their manufacturing units in the town and also the German company KSB Pumps, Swedish bearing company SKF. Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park hosts several Software and Information Technology majors like Accenture, IBM India, KPIT Cummins, Tata Technologies, Infosys,Wipro, Geometric Limited, Finolex cables limited,SQS India Infosystems Pvt. Ltd., BNY Mellon (India) etc.

Transport [edit]

Pimpri-Chinchwad is well connected by road, rail and air. The nearest airport is Pune Airport, with the Maharashtra government planning to set up a new airport near Chakan.^[10] Pune - Lonavla suburban local trains run through this area. Old Pune–Mumbai Highway has been widened to four lanes, which has improved connectivity to Pune and reduced travel time to less than 30 minutes. It has a State Transport Bus stand Pimpri-Chinchwad Bus Stand at Vallabhnagar. Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited(formed by merger of PCMT and PMT) operates the public transport system in this area. The Maharashtra government has proposed metro connectivity to Pimpri-Chinchwad under the Pune Metro project. A BRTS system is also under construction in this area. The main railway stations for this area are Chinchwad Railway Station and Pimpri Railway Station.
