The Samsung Galaxy S8 is an upcoming smartphone, which will be released simultaneously in London and New York City at "Galaxy UNPACKED 2017" on 29 March 2017, with pre-orders reported to commence on April 10. Release of this phone was delayed by further development to address a serious problem of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
The Galaxy S8 was originally teased at Mobile World Congress on 26 February 2017. The teaser included a brief video with generic images. The main impression was that it implied a screen with a 2:1 aspect ratio instead of the 16:9 aspect ratio of most earlier Android smartphones, including its predecessor, the Galaxy S7.
The next day, Forbes and other media outlets reported on claimed photo and video "leaks" suggesting curved screens that will also be larger than the Samsung Galaxy S7 screens. Speculation continued in March regarding the styling, and competition from other phones that were released at the Mobile World Congress. A more serious concern for Samsung was to convince the market that the phone would be safe, unlike the discontinued Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which was subject to a disastrous battery fault.
South Korean news site Naver reported in the beginning of March that manufacture of the phone had commenced in Vietnam, and that at least 4.7 million would be manufactured in March. The phone is expected to be launched simultaneously in key global markets.
Galaxy S8 rumors have circulated since 2016, and a few possible designs have been "leaked". The first rumors suggested a bezel-less display without a home button, and also suggested that a version with a flat front would not be launched (like the Galaxy Note 7). The first rumors about specifications suggested a 4K resolution and the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, although later rumors suggest the inclusion of an audio jack. Rumors from the end of 2016 suggest that the location of the fingerprint scanner will be on the back of the device.
Rumors continue to be released, but the final specifications won't be known until the S8 is launched.
In 2017, new rumors were circulated and the possibilities grew. 2 variants (S8 and S8+) have been rumored, at 5.8 in. and 6.2 in. respectively. Some rumors suggested that an assistant called "Bixby", with a dedicated physical button, would be included. When the "Unbox your phone" video was unveiled, the bezel-less feature was confirmed.
In February 2017, a support website for the Galaxy S8+ (SM-G955FD) in Samsung India briefly went live. In March 2017 the Galaxy S8 was leaked in a video. The device shown had a "confidential" sticker, however it is unknown if the device in the video is real or fake. Rumors also suggested that the Galaxy S8 will have a Quad HD resolution, contradicting the earlier 4K rumor.
