Scotiabank Perú is a Peruvian Bank subsidiary of the Canadian Bank of Nova Scotia. It is the result of the merger of Peruvian banks Wiese Sudameris and Banco Sudamericano. Scotiabank Peru is headquartered in San Isidro, a major financial quarter of Lima.
The bank's presence in Peru dates from 1997, when joined the ownership of Banco Sudamericano with a minority stake of 35%. On 9 March 2006, the Canadian group raised its stake to 100%, becoming its single largest shareholder.
As part of its efforts to expand in Latin America, also on March 9, 2006 the Scotiabank Group acquired 78% stake of Banco Wiese Sudameris from its majority shareholder, the Italian bank Banca Intesa, now Intesa Sanpaolo. In May the combination of the two institutions into a single became concrete, resulting in ScotiaBank Peru S.A.A.
In 2008 the Scotiabank Group purchased the stock control of Scotiabank Peru from Intesa Sanpaolo.
Today the bank is the third biggest finance company of Peru. It performs all the activities of commercial banks: retail banking, business banking, corporate banking and investment banking. As of January 2010, there are 165 branches nationwide, and 1,749 "Service Express" (commercial windows of the Bank) located at retail partners across the country. There are also 335 other ATM locations.
