The Tucson Padres are a minor league baseball team, representing Tucson, Arizona, in the Pacific Coast League (PCL). They are the Triple-A affiliate for the San Diego Padres. The team was formerly known as the Portland Beavers and played its last home game at PGE Park on September 6, 2010. The team revealed their new franchise name on December 18, 2010.[1]The team will move to El Paso in time for the 2014 season.

Franchise history[edit]
Following the 2010 season, the Portland Beavers were placed for sale and relocation because of the lack of a suitable stadium in Portland, as PGE Park (now JELD-Wen Field) was remodeled into a soccer-only configuration for the MLS's 2011 expansion Portland Timbers. In 2010, the Beavers were sold to Jeff Moorad, principal owner of the San Diego Padres.[2]
The Move to Tucson[edit]
On October 19, 2010, it was announced that a site in Escondido, California had been selected for the new home of the Beavers. The new ballpark was scheduled to open in April 2013. Until the move to Escondido could be completed the Padres would play their home games at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.[3] In May 2011, citing reasons of proposed redevelopment revenue confiscation by the State, the ballpark plans in Escondido were placed on indefinite hold.[4][5]
Franchise sale[edit]
Following the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold the 2011 decision by the State to abolish redevelopment agencies it was decided by the Mayor of Escondido, Sam Abed, that the city would not be able to build the proposed stadium.[6] In reaction Jeff Moorad announced he would sell the team if a location within the San Diego area could not be found. No sites materialized and in December 2011, Moorad decided to place the Tucson Padres up for sale.[7] As of 29 December 2011[update], Moorad received offers from buyers in three cities outside California.[8] No offers to keep the team in Tucson were made.[6] As a result, the Padres played in Tucson for the 2012 season and, in July 2012, announced that they would remain in Tucson for the 2013 season as well. Planned Relocation to El Paso[edit]
On July 30, 2012, the Pacific Coast League gave preliminary approval to MountainStar Sports Group, an ownership group based out of El Paso, Texas, for the purchase of the Tucson Padres. The group intends to relocate the franchise to El Paso for the 2014 season when a new ballpark in the city is slated to open. The deal was approved on September 17, 2012, pending approval for a ballpark by city council. Ballpark approval was made on September 18, with the mayor deciding not to veto the deal.[10] The final sale of the Padres to MountainStar Sports was approved on September 26, 2012.[11]
