History[edit]

As NPR increased its program offerings in the 1980s, HRETA began a drive to get a second frequency for classical music programming in hopes of adding more NPR programming on the old WHRO-FM, at 89.5 FM. In 1990, classical music programming was moved to the newly created 90.3 frequency under the existing WHRO-FM callsign. Public radio programing, news, jazz and alternative music remained on the existing 89.5 frequency with a new callsign of WHRV.

In April 2011, classical satellite station WHRJ, Gloucester Courthouse, was added, with a second station, WHRF, Belle Haven, broadcasting in September 2011.
